Buying your own gel kit.

You’ve seen them on Amazon, the gel polish kit which includes a lamp and a couple of colours for £30.00. An absolute bargain right? WRONG!!

You’ve seen your nail tech do it, it looks so easy, surely you can do it too? You are probably very capable of painting your own nails, maybe even other people’s, but if you get uncured product on the skin you are risking developing irreversible allergies. Not to mention incorrect preparation, over filing & incorrect removal which will all damage your nails. Now let’s talk about the actual product, what the hell is in them?! Where are they made?? What levels of chemicals are in them? Do they have safety data sheets? Have they been tested with the lamp? Do they cure properly in said lamp? Are the bottles labelled correctly? Are they even lawful?!

I can’t answer all of these questions but I’d be surprised if they passed all of these requirements. It’s such a shame the industry has gone this way, more and more people are developing allergies and they are irreversible. I know it sounds trivial but I would be devastated if I became allergic to products and never able to have gel or enhancements on my nails again.

Reputable nail technician have spent hundreds, thousands even, on their training. They are fully insured and use professional only products, they have knowledge of the nail anatomy & the products they are using. They are able to correctly apply and remove the products they are using. If there are any problems they can identify and advise or rectify. Susan down the road who charges £10 for a set of gel polish or acrylics, ask yourself WHY is she charging such a small amount? Is she qualified & insured? Registered with HMRC? What products is she using? Is she using a full system? Can she recognised when nails are not suitable? Can she recognise a nail infection? What would she do? Does she KNOW what to do?

I decided to write this post, not to scare anyone, but to make people aware of the dangers from using DIY kits & going to people who aren’t qualified. You’re opening up yourself to develop allergies, infections and complications. Please do your research and be careful!

I am currently studying my VTCT level 3 nail technology qualification. It is very in-depth, I submitted four assignments just this week (my brain has taken a frazzling) and I’m not even half way through! I have chosen to use a professional only brand which is all manufactured in the UK & EU meaning it complies to all our safety standards. I use their whole system so I know the product is fully cured and I am eliminating as many risks as possible to my clients. I am fully insured and client care and safety is so important to me. I’d be interested to read your comments about this whether you are a home user or a qualified tech.

Spread the nail love ♥️

  1. I would also like to add if you do not currently have an insurance policy or you do not form part of any group insurance, you will well reap the benefits of seeking the aid of a health insurance agent. Self-employed or those that have medical conditions typically seek the help of one health insurance brokerage service. Thanks for your writing.
